You may pick whichever instrument you want. The '1st chair' thing was just a joke amongst the original members(there were only 4 of us.) It really doesn't mean anything. Though I'm a tad OCD so i'll probably come up with a set-up of who stands where. Groups will be in sets of 8 btw.
