Paladins are knights of light, justice, blah blah blah. Somewhat like the Marines in comparison to a regular soldier. Intense training, generally better, etc etc.
Dark Knights use the darkness inside of you to activate the dark armor, which allows you to take control over the power of chaos. The armor has a mind of its own, and will drain your life away the moment you lose control of it (when your time runs out your health drops faster than you can say "wtf").
Theres really no "reason they exist". They just do. They're also the opposites of each other. Hence they fight.
Paladins seek to bring justice to the lands, Dark Knights are out to... do whatever they want, I guess.
