You can do it with even as little as 10 MP. Your mana will roughly regenerate for 1 after every 2 charges, and the cost is practically negated when Eweca comes. Chances are the monster will be dead unless you attacked it with dangerously low mana without noticing. Fire isn't too dependable in these situations since the knockback may cause an unwanted spell to be casted. Ice is recommended for Gargoyle combat for low stun time and elemental advantage (against the Lights). If you think you can't kill one yourself and it's safe to team up on one, alternate casts and hits with a party member.

Maybe it is the people you party with, seeing as they've done G1 and can't fight gremlins without getting other people killed. It's very easy to avoid splash damage, and it's somewhat your responsibility to prevent what's after you from splashing your party members.
Would you happen to have been randomly teaming up on the gremlins and wisps? Randomly hitting things is too unpredictable to be considered safe.
