The strategy is to actually pick up the small ones so that the tree can have space to drop more.
The game limits how many items can be in a certain area, so if they fill up, theres just no more places for any other ones to drop, making your hits pointless.
On the other hand, if you do pick them up, then you can always just eat the fruit (no changes to your stats, it is treated as a potion rather than food).
If you see a big one, and its rightfully yours, no one else can pick it up.
So take your time, drop those little ones somewhere else, and then pick it up.
