Kitae's Psychological Dramatic Anime Review #2
This may quite possibly be one of my favorite animes ever. It is, with no doubt, one of the greatest dramatic, psychologically thrilling shows on my list.
Length: 25 Episodes, with a second season (Code Geass R2) ongoing at 4 episodes.
Genre::
Drama, Action, Supernatural,
Anti Hero
13+: Excessive Violence, Mild Language, Mild Adult Themes
When introducing an Anime to a person, people tend to relate it to other animes in order for the others to grasp an idea of what it has to offer. Take the mindset of Death Note, and combine it with the mecha fighting of Gundam Wing or Eureka 7, and throw in the animating budget of the gods. What do you get? Code Geass.
Many of us are very well sick of mecha animes. Knightmares, as they are called in this show, are no different from your average giant robots, which basically one up the speed of a aircraft, one up the power of a tank, and is controlled by one pilot with stereotypical lever controls.
However, Code Geass is more based on character development rather than the action itself.
On August 10, 2010, a.t.b., the Holy Empire of Britannia overpowered Japanese forces and conquered the country with their robotic weapons, the Knightmare Frames, in less than a month. In the aftermath of Britannia's invasion, Japan lost its freedom and rights and was renamed Area 11. The Japanese people, renamed as "Elevens", were forced to survive in ghettos, while Britannians lived in first-class settlements. Rebel elements persisted, however, as pockets of Japanese organizations who struggled against the Empire for the independence of Japan.
After his father, the Emperor of Britannia, ordered the assassination of his mother, an attack which also left his sister crippled, the young prince named Lelouch vowed to destroy Britannia. Seven years later, living in Area 11, he encounters a mysterious girl - C.C. - who gives him the power of Geass. With it, he finally has the power that he needs to defeat Britannia and fulfill his two wishes: to seek revenge for his mother and to construct a world in which his beloved sister can live happily.
Lelouch Lamperouge takes advantage of the rebellious Japanese forces and leads them in a most perfectly planned manner, completely destroying the most frightening forces with little to no loss. With the Geass, which grants him the power to make an irresistible order to anyone he makes eye contact with, he begins his rampage as "the friend of the weak" and the "ally of justice".
However, the Geass comes with its limits and problems. And with this new rise to power under the cover of a masked man named "Zero", his closest friends become his greatest enemies.
And yes, that is the english version. It aired for the first time on Adult Swim last weekend, and the only voice that really bothers me is Lelouch when he was a child. Not much to lose.
Ah yes, and I must finally note one key factor that makes this anime all the better: Lelouch IS considered a Anti-Hero, due to the fact that he is forced to develop into "evil in order to fight evil". He has the most BAD ASS maniacle laughter ever. And he does it every other episode, since he's just so damn good at it.
