Kitae's Psychological Dramatic Anime Review #4
Watch out YuGiOh!, Kaiji has a little something to show you on what REAL card game animes should look like.
Length: 26 Episodes, no confirmation on a 2nd season.
Genre: Gambling, Psychological
17+: Excessive Language, Mild Violence, Some SERIOUS Gambling
One must learn that when attempting to attract a crowd to your anime, it must be visually appealing. However, it seems that whoever made Kaiji was quite a rebel to this rule. The animation is top notch quality. However, the art style is something that has passed its age. While watching this anime, you should ignore the art style and focus fully on the storyline.
An aspect that this show boasts is its dramatic metaphors. The exaggeration used by the narrator just might be more dramatic than the animation of Eyeshield 21.
This anime features way too many scenes with "Dude! I totally did not see that coming!" moments.
Ultimate Survivor Kaiji is about... well, of course, Kaiji. Living his life in pure jealousy of the rich, and spending his days bumming out as a poor man, Kaiji has always been nothing more than a "loser". When a coworker from the past leaves his debt of 3,850,000 yen to the yakuza under Kaiji's name (or the loan sharks, whatever you want to call them), Kaiji is left with only one option: enter the boat where indebted people like himself gamble each other for survival, and possibly win millions of yen in the process.
Kaiji, fully understanding the graveness of his situation, decides to clear himself up and use this opportunity to find himself a new life. Using his method of planning before acting, he tops out the others in the gambling world. What is the game in the yakuza's boat?
Restricted Rock Paper Scissors. A game in which players must play rock paper scissors with cards. There are many rules that apply, but most of them are very standard. You play a game of rock paper scissors, and if you win, you take a star from your opponent. If you have at least 3 stars and have used all your cards by the end of your match, you will not be thrown into a lifetime of slave labor.
Though at first the game sounds completely simple, but as the show progresses, this game is FULL of opportunities and strategies. Though Kaiji is faced with experienced players, lucky gamblers, and traitors, he plans his way through his opposition, with his life on the line each move he makes.
After one challenge to the next, Kaiji is made to face several different games with his life on the line. One thing is for sure, however: the ending will never be guessed by any of you XD
**Do not watch this anime if you cannot accept the fact that loan sharks like this really exist in this world and indebted people really are captured for slave labor in a "happy island" in a "mystical place far far away"**
