Kitae's Humor Anime Review #2
Also known as Hayate No Gotoku. I wouldn't post anime reviews if it wasn't on my top all time favorites list. Hayate No Gotoku is one that I dream about every day.
Length: 52 Episodes, complete. Ongoing Manga.
Genre: Comedy, Romance, Slice-Of-Life, Parody
13+ Mild Violence, Mild Adult Themes, Mild Language
Despite the title, this anime lacks the fight scenes that an action based series includes.
Quite similar to Lucky Star, Hayate No Gotoku is a anime that likes to refer to outside sources while censoring them out as if we all are expected to know what they're saying (thus, to get the full joke of their conversation, you require vast knowledge of video games, other anime, and movies). Scenes, attacks, and art styles will be parodied often throughout the series.
The story is about an unfortunate 16 year old named Hayate, whose parents are complete bums. As far as he can remember, his parents have always been unemployed and have been gambling addicts. The moment Hayate seemed old enough, he lied about his age and began working various (and dangerous) jobs in order to support the family. One christmas eve, Hayate comes home from working to find that his parents have ran away, leaving an IOU from the loan sharks to Hayate as a "christmas gift". With 15 million yen in debt, the only way Hayate was to pay it off was to sell his organs or attend manual labor for eternity.
Desperate for money, Hayate decides to change his friendly ways and kidnap for ransom. He approaches Nagi, a small 13 year old girl who ran away from a party, and politely asks her if he can kidnap her. Thanks to a dreaded miscommunications error, Nagi thinks Hayate just asked her out, and decides to give Hayate "a chance".
While Hayate leaves Nagi unattended, she becomes kidnapped by other debt holders instead. When Hayate somehow ends up saving her (with the body of a "gundam" that he's trained up with the various jobs in his past), Nagi decides to make Hayate her own butler.
The series continues with Nagi believing that she is in a relationship with Hayate. However, Hayate only shows care for Nagi because "she was nice enough to give me a live-in job even after I tried to kidnap her". Only the maid in the house, Maria, knows the truth between the two. As things are starting to finally look up for Hayate, more problems arise. With Loan Sharks, Robots, Estate Hunters, a Talking Tiger, and a Stubborn Head Butler on his case, Hayate's streak of bad luck seems to be only beginning.
The most hilarious part of this series is the onslaught of unfortunate events that haunt Hayate. With each step he takes, he falls into a pit of a deeper problem. If Hayate is entrusted with money, people who he deems "more unfortunate" begin to appear everywhere. If he is lent a suit, then all the world's stain-causing liquids seem to fly at him.
The true beauty of this anime lies in the fact that Hayate never realizes Nagi fell for him. When he is told by Maria to court Nagi in order to pay off his debt, he claims that he could never use someone who has saved him for such a purpose. The relationship from Hayate to Nagi can be better seen as a caring brother or a care taker, rather than a boyfriend. For an anime that revolves around so many girls, fanservice seems to be mostly (but not fully) limited to split second illustrations of female characters in bikinis between commercial breaks. If anything, Hayate being forced to crossdress in a episode or two is the biggest fanservice you'll see.
Another thing is the "visual censor" man, who appears on screen to cover up any unnecessary blood and copyright infringement scenes for comical purposes.
It is extremely difficult to get a good preview video for this series, so I will post three videos of Hayate No Gotoku parodying another anime instead.
The censorship strikes!
Yes, Hayate is punching Santa Claus in that picture.
*This anime features a VERY unfortunate main character with a very sad and depressing life. Though the series overall is humorous, some wusses can't stand this and ends up cutting themselves. If you're one of these poor souls, do not watch this anime*
