Default What do you do when...

You're cat's sick? And I don't mean "omgfluortummyache" sick... I'll explain in detail, though a few have already read my post in the spam thread. But this is an actual question.

A few weeks ago my love and I noticed that our little kitty, Kiwi, who is 2 years old had begun to "try" to pee on, well, everything, clothes, plastic bags, etc. He wasn't peeing in the litterbox, even when he was trying.
I called the vet and they said it sounded like a urinary tract infection. So the next day I brought him in, it could have been one of two things: 1] A urninary tract infection or 2] a blocked bladder. Guess which one we got luck with. Yup, a blocked bladder.
So the vet tells us, "Well you can either leave him here, and we can drain his bladder overnight, or you can take him home and he will die." What do we choose? DUH of course we leave him there.
Huzzah we think we're bringing him home the next day. Nope, turns out he's still not peeing so they end up keeping him for like...4 days. Then we're finally able to bring him home. Well....he's still not being so for the next two days we bring him in, take home, etc to get his bladder unblocked.
Didn't help AT ALL. So they put a tube in him and we brought him home with a cone on his head. He had to have a tube left in all weekend, Friday-Monday so that his bladder would drain.
On Monday we brought him home. He could pee finally! A week passed and everything is great still. La la la we're super duper happy! We didn't have to get the surgery we had been talking about those two weeks of taking him and to and from the vets.
[A 400$ surgery mind you]
Well, yesterday he started coughing in the litterbox when he's trying to pee. He's peeing a little as far as I had known, but today he's coughing more and so I called the vet, I thought maybe he was allergic to his kitty litter, 'cause I heard that had been a problem with one lady's cat. But the vet told me that they doubted it, but to try it anyway.
Well I changed it. But he's still coughing... He's eating, slightly drinking, and acting normal except in the litterbox where he coughs while he's in there.
You know how when you get a urinary tract infection and it hurts to pee? And you kind of grunt or whatever when you pee 'cause it hurts? I'm hoping that that's all it is, he's just got an infection [even though we're giving him meds to NOT get an infection] and that he'll be fine and we won't need the surgery.
So, I called them again, four hours later [like 30 minutes ago] an they scheduled me for tomorrow at 8:15am. I'm hoping to hitch a ride with my loves' aunt 'cause she takes him to work tomorrow at 8:15am anyway. Besides, getting a taxi is like 15 bucks to there and 15 bucks back. If I have to get the surgery, we have to pay mayb 50 bucks up front, and that's 80$ of ours, gone. And at the moment we only HAVE 80$ in the bank. =.= Luckily my love gets paid today and can hopefully get the money in the bank tonight. That's 200$ more that we'll have. We're currently living off ONE income because since we have no car, I can't get a job, and the place he works is NOT hiring except one position which I can't apply for because you have to have "professional" references and I pretty much just wrote down my youth pastor back in Texas 'cause I've only ever held one job before and that was at Wal-Mart for like 6-7 weeks, 'cause Wal-Mart hates their employees, or just me.

So my question is: If this has happened to your cat, or you know any info, is this surgery really that good? I mean, I've read about it online and hear that it is good, but sometimes it can cause scarring to block off the area in which they pee and they can die and all that and I'm one of those paranoid girls who thinks the worst will happen...

^^; Thanks anyway. This is apparently common in male cats I've been told because the uretha[?] is smaller at the end than the females...the surgery basically makes him a girl so he can pee better. o-o
