VERSION 1: This guide will be updated/modified depending on what people say/if I find something.
Basically, this is what I follow to get a decent reputation (not the reputation your probably thinking of, the reputation as in coolness/well known etc.) in forums, I wrote this myself, though.
Knowing the Rules
First of all, you will need to follow the
Rules .
This is pretty simple, I will not need to go over this, read through the rules 1 or 2 times, and you should be fine.
Respecting other members and yourself
If you get called a noob often, you probably deserve it, if you want to start getting treated right, treat others right first, no one will want to befriend a loser.
If someone is in need, and you have a spare moment, help them out, and you'll get payed back eventually.
Also, don't put your self down so much, if you're not good at something, telling everyone will make you look emo.
Karma my fellow members, karma.
Posting
Generally, to make you look good, a high post count will make you look better, and obviously more respected. If you post 5-10 times per day, after a month, it will be 150-300 posts, and after half a year, you'll have thousands of posts.
Of course, you can try and post more, which will take less time, but this is up to you.
Posting>Spamming
Spamming will do the opposite, if you spam, you will be hated throughout the entire forum, and eventually will get into trouble. Examples of spam are below;
Posting more then once in a row in the same topic
Flaming
Grave Digging
Off-Topic Posts
Reputation
Having a decent amount of rep will make you look trustworthy, you can get rep
power by posting, you get a certain amount per posts, which is uncertain for me at this time (will update).
You also get rep power from receiving a lot of reputation from others.
To give rep, just click the scale on the bottom left of someone's post, it's pretty easy.
A good way to get rep, would be to help others, contribute by posting, answering other peoples questions etc.
Referring
Referring users will also make you stand out, it helps contribute to the site, brining more members, more posts. For information on how to refer, click
Here.
Basically, just copy that link and give a brief description to your friends, or put it in your signature in other sites, but don't go on spamming it everywhere, it will bring a bad reputation to MG.
Donating
By donating, you will become a "rank name yet to be decided" user, you'll have access to programs, and you'll have a wicked userbar/usertitle

Of course, no one is forcing you to donate, if you don't want to, DON'T, you can get respected, and become a contributive member in other ways.
Reporting posts
By reporting posts, you keep the forum clean, and a better environment.
If you ever see something wrong, just click the! Button near the rep button, and add a reason, it will automatically be sent to the staff and one of them will handle it. To report a post, click the button that looks like this -->
Activeness
If you remain active, meaning posting a few times per day (on average, if you don't go on one day, post twice as much the next day). You do not need to post 100 times in a day, but a moderated amount (small amounts every day).
Getting to know the members
Instead of just leeching, try getting to know some of the members, PM them saying hello, ask for there MSN or aim, get to know them.
You will end up making a few friends, some might even be already well known, and you will get well known too.
Reminding others of the rules
If someone is breaking the rules, report the post, don't act like a mod and take the situation into your own hands, that's the moderators/staff's job. This is called back-seat modding, which no body likes, and can get you infracted.
Reading announcements
If you read through all the announcements, you will learn a great deal about the forum, even some things that a lot of other members wouldn't know, I read through some of the really old stuff, and I actually learned a thing or two.
Don't post though, that's grave digging.
Grave digging
Grave digging is when you post in a topic that's old, basically, don't post in anything that hasn't been posted in for a week or more, if you really are paranoid, check the date of the last post, if its over a month ago, DO NOT POST UNLESS IS URGENT/IMPORTANT.
Even then, just PM it to a staff member or the thread creator.
Top 10 Posts
If you can get into this it's a sure win to popularity, you name will be separated from the rest of the user names, and will be on the MG wall of fame
Additional Info
Thanks for reading, good luck with becoming a great member one day.
