Help with Border making.

In most of your siggys you guys have a border for it but when I try to make borders they look....horrindous?(Is that a word?) I'd like to know how you guys make a border. Do you use a user-made pattern or do you just draw the lines yourself? Just wondering. May decide to tip the most helpful(s).

well from what ive seen. assuming u use photoshop, just go to blending options, stroke, change outside to inside and theres how i made mines o.o just change the colors a bit.. i 4got the other way to make one.. i think its easier.

what i do:
ctrl+a(select all), edit->stroke, then choose the color and px(i usually like my borders with black and then white, thats 1px black->selection->modify->contract->1px>edit->stroke->1px white, or make 2px white and put it in overlay/softlight).

English please?? wow that confused me >.< I'm bad at this lol...

I always just use the rectangular marquee tool to select a rectangle then right click and select "inverse selection" so the outer edge is selected instead of the main pic, then apply my filters/colors/etc. to that...

I forgot how to use the masking tool...

oh and i missed the "new layer" part.
so you make a new layer ontop, hold ctrl+a to select all, then go to edit then go stroke, etc etc :O
