Default Just Curious

What exactly does it take to become "good" at Mabinogi in general? Does it require hundreds of hours of grinding to get a rank 1 skill or does it require loads of cash to buy ribirths for AP? After experiencing this game a little over half a month, I've decided that one day (a long time from now... ) I want to become a decent player at this game. I just want to know what to expect when I finally find the time to do this.

Meh, just having a good amount of friends, adequate cash, good clothes and maybe just that 1 skill that a person specializes in that mostly everybody respects you for. That's my definition of a good player. After 1-2 rebirths, you start to see that you can be pretty decent and respected, even by players of a higher caliber.

When you can define what does it mean to be a decent player, maybe we can tell you what is a decent player. But wait, if you already can define a decent player, why you need us to tell you how to be a decent player?

The point is that everyone has their own idea of a decent player.
None of those definition are wrong...

and none of them are necessary correct.

Well since this isn't the first time I've seen these questions come up, I already expect to see the usual answers...but here's my two cents.

It doesn't matter what level, what you know about the game, future generations, which monsters are in each dungeons, or how much money you have.

Money in this game is saved and spent. There is no limit to the currency in this game, so you could earn money whenever.

What I would call a "decent" player is one who can survive. Of course people who are rude wouldn't fit my criteria for a "decent" player. People make mistakes, they get lag, it happens. Being forgiving would also have to be a good pointer.

Of course, with the exponential gap between people's skill ranks and levels, I'm sure others would be able to survive a heck of alot more than me

In game cash has nothing to do with it.

Mabinogi (in my opinion, anyway) is more based on Player-skill than Character-skill in the early days of your character. There are little tricks and tidbits to learn about the combat system that will put you ahead of the other people just starting the game around your level. This leans on what Qwanz said about ingame cash meaning nothing... the best armor won't protect you if you don't know what you're doing. Gotta learn the tricks of the Mabi trade!

I also think it's best to familiarize yourself with the way the game works before you shoot for that one skill you've seen, because if you think magic is more powerful than melee till you see that one really cool 2+Windmill (fancy jargon alert!) wiping out a giant group of enemies you could end up with way more magic skills than you eventually want.
(not that I'm saying melee is better, mind you... I'm a mutt-mage. ;D )

Anyway, if you're in Ruairi, I'm willing to give you a tour of the combat system, and I can teach you basically every trick in the book. Hope you're on my server so I can give you a hand, you seem like you're actually determined to get better. :3

How well you adapt into the game. If you want to be a decent player, take your time to learn from other players who you know are better than you. Also try watching most of Sen's Videos, they're useful if you dont know much techniques.

P.S. R5+ WM and your already good :3

Well... R5 doesn't take that long... as long as you have enough APs.

The real training starts at R4.

Btw... my definition of being Good is..
= Control

That is a simple question, but doesn't have a simple precise answer.
It depends on:

1) Amount of Combat Power you have
2) Amount of free AP you have
3) Where you training your Windmill
4) How fast are you killing the monsters in the Windmill training
5) How often you get interrupted (such as dying or need to move around for more spawn)

However, you still are required to grind...
If you do not like to grind, don't bother playing any MMORPGs.

Like the decent player concept, "long" and "short" time is defined differently from person to person.

Some people may think that getting to R5 Windmill is a short time while some people think that getting enough AP to get RE Windmill is a long time.
