Special:Imagelist is the page indexing all the images, though it doesn't, unfortunately, show thumbnails (there might be a GreaseMonkey script to change that though; I can't be arsed to find it xD).
I think the best-bet regarding standardization is to find a data file dumper (like there are for Maplestory) and dump the NPC pictures directly from the client, then just use those and use MediaWiki's thumbnails where needed.
I dunno lol.
Also, the boards are a lot easier to read than the talk pages lulz.

Not really an odd reason - it's protected by default because it's an element which is on every page AND doesn't need to be changed more than once or twice a year (maybe). If it were changeable by default, then it would be fairly easy for someone to magically goatse every page in the wiki without much trouble.
Also the front page is normally protected too, expect that to happen once the game opens and the wiki becomes populated (with data and users) and the vandals arrive
