China will “only” increase its military spending by 7.5% in 2010, to 532 billion yuan; the force is already the world’s largest with some 3,000,000 members.
China has been increasing its military budget by over 10% each year for the past two decades or more, but many suspect it has been concealing the true magnitude of its military expenditures amidst its notoriously opaque public spending, and are similarly sceptical about this year’s supposed reduction in increases.
China claims its purpose in this huge armaments program is purely self-defence:
Quote:
“The only purpose of China’s limited military strength is to safeguard China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
China insists its territory includes land currently administered by several neighbouring nations, and historically has felt free to impose its sovereignty on non-Chinese peoples in a vast empire, intact to this day:
Quote:
Hawks within the PLA advocate building a huge military force with which to challenge the west, the so-called “China Dream.” Even moderates advocate the invasion of Taiwan, which is already the target of thousands of missiles.
One Chinese foreign policy think-tank was last year lambasted for suggesting Chinese policy should encourage the forcible break-up of India, and Chinese submarines have repeatedly infiltrated Japanese territorial waters – many understandably wonder if its rise will be as peaceful as it claims.
well even if they got all these people and technology
what if it becomes outdated in just a few decades?
they can't pay to afford to buy this new technology all over again for the entire military
That's what happens when China is a mostly male population.
Interesting thought. But i wonder, if that is true (with the history of favoring sons with the one-child policy, and according to the wiki, it is, with female infant fatality higher than male), won't China take a hit in its population as there aren't enough wives? Of course, if you throw your sons into war, that will balance out the gender population... But defeats the point of having sons to carry on the family name and care for elderly parents. Then again, I am thinking with a western mind, where i would encourage my son to dodge draft, whereas other places in the world may not have that. (Mulan's sickly father comes to mind.)
Another thought. Humans are warlike creatures to begin with. And China has been an Empire for thousands of years. It's outlasted the Roman Empire and the British Empire. And with the US giving them favored trader status and taking loans from them, perhaps China will rebirth stronger than the American Empire. (And remember, we are only a 200 year old country, a baby who only has had world power since the 1940's.)
Just playing devil's avocate here.

Even if it gets a hit on its population, it is still the most populated country in the world. (Or maybe India will beat it soon?) No need to worry about population/birth rate over there.
Its neighbor, on the other hand, Japan is going to have a population problem soon.
It is very unlikely China will be in any major war anytime soon. They are much more clever when it comes to politics as opposed to the US, which seem to have its hands on all parts of the world. It would rather destroy foreign businesses with its overflow of very cheap goods.
Premier Wen Jiabao will give his annual work report -- the equivalent of a "state of the nation" address -- on Friday.
He is expected to announce the government's economic growth targets, annual budgets and other policy measures aimed at keeping China's strong economic growth.
That includes an expected 7.5 percent increase in China's defense budget for 2010, down from last year's annual increase of 14.9 percent.
