Compare highschool in America and 5th grade in Korea.
Generally got the same amount of homework. Actually, I'd say there was more pressure and studying for students in Korea with the Highschool placement testing.
This is why Asia will always be pumping out fancy technology. People are really too soft on their kids these days.

I never took Abacus courses, but I did do some insane activities after school in 3rd grade back in Korea. Millions and millions of basic math problems to get your head rolling and calculating faster.
I didn't start learning English AT ALL until I came to America in 4th grade, and I was the spelling bee champion in 5th grade despite my one year experience.
The guys at the University of Ottawa is on crack or something, homework exists for a reason.
Like it or not, the validity of it still exists. Teachers these days tend to pass it off and turn it into busy work instead, but there are still many situations where homework can be the largest learning experience in an education.
Lets face it, none of us likes homework, but the ones that do it are usually smarter. Not always, but theres a pretty darn good correlation.
