Couldn't find any other topics about this in Mabiguru (rather suprised) but I might've missed it. Anyhow, I can't believe this. Why mess around with food!?

Because of this, my mom's been avoiding all chinese products and alot of korean products (since alot of ingredients, etc are imported in from china). Not only that, alot of american products too! =.= Just great.
So my mom began making this list of "not to eat" food products and its getting rather long.
Items that we've been consuming are also on the list as well as some (even brand-name products such as Dove and M&M and Nestle were included in the list! And Orion! (Nooo my choco-pies!).

It's been on the news (starting from a while ago) but ugghh.

So! Have you been consuming Melamine-contaminated food products?

Hong Kong - Melamine, a plastic-making chemical that has been found in Chinese milk products, may cause far more serious complications than just kidney stones, experts have warned.

While stones can be removed easily, far more worrying is when melamine starts crystallising in small kidney tubes, or tubules - long, winding structures that filter blood, reabsorbing what is needed and excreting the rest as urine - which will block connecting ducts and result in kidney damage and even failure.

"Human urine seems to have the right acidity for melamine to crystallise," explained Daniel Chan, a professor in nephrology at the University of Hong Kong. "The damage may be occurring in renal tubules where the urine is being transported. When a lot of the tubules are blocked by crystals, the kidneys don't serve their function, and the children go into kidney failure."

Melamine turned up last year in Chinese pet food exported to the United States, where many animals developed kidney failure and died. That scandal led to the theory that melamine can crystallise in kidney tubules.

Wong Kar-yin, a paediatrician in Hong Kong, added: "Large stones can be removed. But if renal tubules are stuck with crystals, there may not be effective treatment."

He said affected children would need long-term monitoring. "If there is severe tubular damage, there could be kidney impairment … the child may have to undergo dialysis or even need a kidney transplant. That's the worst-case scenario." - Reuters
