My pets used to be able to attack things that i make them by targeting it from as far as i can see the enemy on my screen but now they can only do that if it's really close. They can't even target things for themselves from far away anymore. I've tried tried using other attack settings but it doesn't help.

Control it manually then. Works wonders for me. Right click the monster and click 'Attack with Pet' so the pet goes after it immediately.

The farthest my pet can target, manually, is about as far as I can see before the enemy fades into the background.

There may be times where the pet becomes 'stuck' because of certain ai settings... or something. You may have to tell it to tell it to attack again. If that doesn't work, a quick fix I use is to use the rest command, via hotkey, and then tell it to attack.

I think telling it to rest resets the AI. Sometimes it doesn't... though I'm no expert in the actual mechanics.
