All you need is icebolt and counter.
Mages can just Lightning Bolt spam or Ice Bolt spam when it's a high rank.

I can handle the skeletons fine, without getting hit barely. But I always die when the next one aggro me. mostof the time the next agro'd skeleton is on the other end of the room and when I run up to me, we end up hitting each other(Thats when I die). Thats pretty much the hard part. I can handle the first skeleton sometimes, but the onr thats heading for me is always to far away. Crap!

If you know you're too far load counter or WM, or use an ice bolt stun. then normal attack as usual.
Or load ice in the case of metal/red, since if they're far there's a high chance they pull their bow out, so shoot them with that ice, then do whatever you're most comfortable with: counter or WM or load another ice (if they still have their bow), or rush them with a normal attack (if close enough).

To be on the safe side when killing skeletons, after killing one skeleton, go on counter as soon as the next one aggroes or load up firebolt.

I've read the guide and it helps, but is it a better idea to Raise Ice or Fire? I can spare the 3 Ap. Windmill has screwed my mind

You should get all basic bolts. its up to your preference what to get first since both are useful.

Personally id say rank ice, since fire is more of a starting technique. Meaning you charge 5 bolts and just fire it wen the monster aggros. Most of the time you probably won't have enough time to charge up all 5 firebolts, meaning you arent using it to its full potential.

Lightning kinda expensive mana and ap wise, so ya go with ice for the versatility (is that a word?)
